Audiobook
"A well-meaning second wife is made miserable by the fact that she is continually compared, to her disadvantage, with her predecessor. What may conveniently be called the "theme" is stated clearly by Hilary Jesson, toward the close of the third act: "I declare to you that the happy people I've come across have never been the people who, possessing power, have employed it malevolently or uncharitably." This play achieved a notable success in the theatre, not only in England, but also in the United States; it was acclaimed so way away from London as Milan, where an Italian version ... was acted before enthusiastic audiences. - Summary by Clayton Hamilton, 1919
