Audiobook
Ponza has just arrived in town to take a job as secretary for the prefecture. He lives with his wife, whom no-one ever sees, in an apartment on one side of town and has rented an apartment on the other side for his mother-in-law, Signora Frola, in the same building as the other characters, who all love to gossip and speculate about their new neighbour. But soon, mystery builds upon mystery about the Ponza couple and Signora Frola. Is she mad? Is Ponza? Who is Signora Ponza really? Signora Frola’s daughter or an entirely different woman?
Pirandello, in his characteristic way, takes us on a wild and hilarious ride through a lot of speculation, but provides no satisfactory answers. - Summary by Winnifred Assmann
