Thomas Hardy’s last substantial creative work, The Famous Tragedy of The Queen of Cornwall at Tintagel in Lyonesse: A New Version of an Old Story Arranged as a Play for Mummers in One Act Requiring No Theatre or Scenery, is a verse tragedy based on the legend of Tristram and Iseult. Begun in 1870, it wasn’t finished until 1923.
Written in a hybrid style that includes both blank and rhymed verse, the play follows Aristotle’s conventions for Greek tragedy of keeping all the action in one place and within 24 hours. It also contains a Chorus (though Hardy calls them “Chanters.”) - Summary by Winnifred Assmann
