This novel is written in the form of a series of letters. Our hero, Henry, is a man of some wealth but has decided to forsake the life intended for him to live a Bohemian lifestyle in a hovel in Paris. He has met a young actress and is obviously smitten, or, as his friend Paddy tells him, "making a foo of himself". Meanwhile, he is wondering whether to pay for her to go to finishing school, help her find her long-lost --and probably criminal -- family or just leave her where she is..
