Peter Christen Asbjornsen and his sometimes collaborator Jorgen Engebretsen Moe collected and published Norwegian folk tales much as the Grimm brothers had earlier done for German tales. The best known translations in the English language were done by Sir George Webbe Dasent who is sometimes credited as the author. The first collection published in English by Dasent were immediately popular and remain well-known. Less well-known is this second collection, which is unfortunate because these tales continue to exhibit the Scandinavian wit as well as bring forward the life-style for modern readers. While remaining popular in Norway, most of the stories in this volume are now unfamiliar to the English-speaking public. - Summary by Hox
